It’s getting to the point where Netflix will have done every anime possible. Here’s the thing though, they are making some really smart decisions. When I saw the announcement that they would be making a Terminator anime series, it felt like a no brainer.
Netflix and Skydance will team up for the project, and partner with Production I.G (Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, B: The Beginning) for the animation. Mattson Tomlin (Project Power, The Batman) will serve as showrunner. We don’t know much beyond that, but Tomlin is clearly excited to be a part of the show.
“Anyone who knows my writing knows I believe in taking big swings and going for the heart. I’m honored that Netflix and Skydance have given me the opportunity to approach Terminator in a way that breaks conventions, subverts expectations and has real guts,” he said.
That’s our hint that we’ll be getting a different kind of Terminator story this time around. That seemed to be echoed by John Derderian, Netflix, Vice President of Japan & Anime.
“Terminator is one of the most iconic sci-fi stories ever created–and has only grown more relevant to our world over time. The new animated series will explore this universe in a way that has never been done before. We can’t wait for fans to experience this amazing new chapter in the epic battle between machines and humans,” said Derderian.
No release date or casting information has been made available yet. Netflix has so many anime projects in the works right now, I expect frequent updates throughout the year. I’ll try my best to keep up with them all.
