Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. Wait, you have, almost three years ago. There have been a lot of news and rumors around DC’s Blue Beetle in that time. Back on Episode 242 of our podcast, we discussed the announcement of a Blue Beetle movie. Since then there were rumors of an appearance in the Arrowverse, a possible live action series and news that the character would be getting his own animated short in the latest round of DC Showcase.
Well, here we go again. The Wrap reports that Warner Bros. and DC have a Blue Beetle movie in the works again. This adaptation would focus on Jamie Reyes, and would mark the first Mexican-American led superhero film from DC. Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) would direct, with the script written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala). Zev Foreman will serve as executive producer.
You’d think that having a creative team in place means that it’s a good sign that they’re serious. Soto even provided a statement to The Wrap.
“It is an honor to direct Blue Beetle, the first Latino superhero film for DC,” said Soto. “I want to sincerely thank everyone at Warner Bros. and DC for trusting me to bring Jaime Reyes to life. I can’t wait to make history together.”
Apparently production would begin this fall, which seems quite ambitious given everything that is going on right now. For me, until cameras start rolling, I’m going to have to remain in “I’ll believe it when I see it” mode. Jamie Reyes is a fun character, and would make for a very entertaining movie. I just don’t want to get my hopes up just yet.
More on this as it develops.
