Carol Danvers has her foe for the upcoming Captain Marvel sequel. Deadline reports that Zawe Ashton has been cast as the villain in the film. Nia DaCosta is set to direct. Who that is exactly wasn’t announced, but I’ll get to that in a moment.
Ashton has been seen in Velvet Buzzsaw and Wunderlust (pictured.) Her MCU connection? She starred with Tom Hiddleston in Betrayal on Broadway. It probably had nothing to do with her casting, but it can’t hurt to know Loki. It’s worth noting that Marvel Studios and Disney refused to comment. I guess we’ll wait for a congratulatory tweet from Mark Ruffalo.
As for who Ashton will play, I do have one thought. Since the multiverse will be well in play by this point, having Moonstone as the villain seems possible. Think of her as the evil Ms. Marvel. This would also set up a possible Dark Avengers storyline, which I would be all for. Keep in mind, we already know that Ms. Marvel, Iman Vellani, is part of the cast. Teyonah Parris is as Monica Rambeau as well. Given what’s happening in WandaVision, all of this really could add up.
Captain Marvel 2 will be released on November 11, 2022.
