Crime noir is very much an untapped part of comics right now, in my opinion. I know that it is a genre that has told plenty of stories in the past, but if done well, it is a timeless genre. Valiant Entertainment has announced yet another new story, and an impressive creative team. Let's take a look at The Final Witness.
According to the press release from Valiant, The Final Witness will tell the story of a new hero, possibly even more than one. It seems that the story will follow a hero, a detective and a journalist who try to solve multiple murders in San Francisco. Nerdist was the first to reveal more details, adding that, "The Valiant Universe has a serial killer on the loose, and their methods are…terrifying. Enter Detective Hannah Grey, Investigative Journalist David Parson, and Nick Miller — San Francisco’s newest unidentified superpowered guardian — on the case to solve one of the most chilling cases ever to cross their paths. Debuting a cast of all-new heroes — and perhaps the most frightening villain yet."
As for the creative team, the story comes from writer Ray Fawkes, artist Jeremy Haun, colorist Nick Filardi and letters by Clayton Cowles. Covers will be provided by Rahzzah, Michael Walsh, Caspar Wijngaard, Jeremy Haun and Travis Escarfullery. Fawkes says that, "People who read my work know I love the darker side of things, and this book is one where I truly get to cut loose. I'm really looking forward to watching fans try to unravel the mystery!"
Valiant has been taking quite a few chances with new books, new heroes and new types of stories. Now we can love the existing universe, and some of these new stories as well. The first clue will be revealed when The Final Witness hits local comic book shops and digital retailers on April 29, 2020.
