Day 2 of Netflix’ Geeked Week starts off with adventure on the high seas. The only thing better than swashbuckling is when the treasure that you hunt happens to be seas monsters. The Sea Beast will not only be streaming on Netflix in July, it will get a limited theatrical release as well.
The movie comes from the mind of Chris Williams, who will serve as writer (along with Nell Benjamin), director and producer. If that name sounds familiar, he was the co-director for Moana and also directed Big Hero 6. So he brings his experience at Disney over to Netflix. It also tells me that he knows how to pair up an aspiring young hero with a larger than life legend. We see that in the trailer with Maisie Brumble and Jacob Holland.
Karl Urban provides the voice of Jacob Holland, while Zaris-Angel Hator will play Maisie. You’ll also hear the voices of Dan Stevens, Jared Harris, Marianne Jean-Baptiste and many others.
Here is the synopsis that has been previously released by Netflix: “In an era when terrifying beasts roamed the seas, monster hunters were celebrated heroes – and none were more beloved than the great Jacob Holland. But when young Maisie Brumble stows away on his fabled ship, he’s saddled with an unexpected ally. Together they embark on an epic journey into uncharted waters and make history. THE SEA BEAST takes us to where the map ends, and the true adventure begins.”
If this is the kind of adventure that you’d love to take with your family, The Sea Beast will get a theatrical release later this month. If you’d rather hunt these beasts at home, you can stream the movie on Netflix beginning July 8th. Set yourself a reminder here. We’ll have more coverage as information becomes available, as well as a review closer to the release.
