We know that Robert Pattinson will be the next Dark Knight, but now The Batman casting rumors are really starting to heat up for some other names. The first name that popped up was Jeffrey Wright (Westworld), who The Hollywood Reporter says could be the next Commissioner Gordon. There was also a report from Variety that Jonah Hill (The Wolf of Wall Street) is being looked at for a mystery role.
Taking this one step at a time, Wright really could be a great choice to play Gordon. He just has such a commanding presence, and could really fit the style that Matt Reeves seems to be going for in The Batman. I will admit that I am a little bit sad that we won't get to see what J.K. Simmons could really do with the character. He never really got a fair chance, but I think that Wright will be given a much longer tenure.
As for Hill, there have been rumors for a LONG time that he would be playing The Penguin in The Batman. Have you seen pictures of Jonah Hill lately? He has definitely slimmed down. While this doesn't disqualify him from playing Oswald Cobblepot, it certainly casts a bit of doubt. There has also been some speculation that Hill would instead play The Riddler. The report does suggest that the character choice will play a factor in the negotiations, and that this is far from a done deal. It's hard to imagine Jonah Hill as The Riddler for me personally, but he certainly has the talent to pull off either role.
With production set to start later this year, or the beginning of 2020, these rumors will likely be confirmed sooner rather than later. The Batman will be in theaters June 25, 20201.
