Who knew that “May The 4th Be With You” would be such a big news day? It looks like a fan favorite director will indeed be behind the camera of a new Star Wars movie after all. StarWars.com has confirmed that Taika Waititi, who you know and love from Thor: Ragnarok and The Mandalorian, will be directing a new Star Wars movie.
Waititi will also co-write the script with Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who was just nominated for an Oscar for her work on 1917. I’d love to say that is a hint for what we might see in this new movie, but who knows? The release date has yet to be announced officially, but I have seen a few reports that are saying December of 2022. Not sure how or why anyone came up with that, considering Waititi still has no idea when work on Thor: Love And Thunder will begin, also scheduled for 2022. It seems highly unlikely that Disney would have one director working on two projects of that magnitude concurrently.
The other thing I was wondering was, didn’t Disney say they were done making Star Wars movies for a while? I’m pretty sure Bob Iger said something about the future of Star Wars being in television. One pandemic later, and with Iger leaving his position, I guess that stance has been revised. Despite how some fans might react, Star Wars movies practically print money and Taika Waititi has grown in popularity with each passing project.
I hesitate to ask, but how do you feel about this news?
