In the social media age, it seems like it's hard to have any real surprises anymore. Every now and then, something flies under the radar and it's glorious. This weekend, a brand new short film, set in the Jurassic World franchise debuted. The almost 9 minute short first aired on FX, just after the Jurassic World movie on the network. Now it's online, just in case you missed it. Here is Battle At Big Rock:
This new short was not only directed by Jurassic World's Colin Trevorrow, he also wrote it alongside Emily Carmichael. In case you skipped the credits, some of the cast members included André Holland, Natalie Martinez, Melody Hurd, and Pierson Salvador. According to the description listed on the YouTube page for the video, "The short takes place one year after the events of the last film in Big Rock National Park, where dinosaurs are now living in our world. The story follows a family of four whose encounter with these wild animals becomes a terrifying fight for survival."
It starts out very innocently, but I don't mind telling you, by the end my heart was racing. No spoilers here, but we do get to see some new dinos that we haven't seen in the previous movies. Fans are already starting to speculate as to whether or not this is a sign of things to come for the third installment of the Jurassic World franchise. I'll echo the sentiment that, if it is, it could be a very interesting premise. Sure we had a "dinosaurs are walking among us" feel in Jurassic Park 3 for a time, but this short does conjure up a lot of questions and seems to take things in a different direction. Granted, this is a lot of speculation, but even if this is just a random short to hype up the franchise, I'm fine with that.
What's interesting is, we did have a LEGO Jurassic World movie debut on Nickelodeon recently. We also know that a Jurassic World animated series is coming to Netflix. This short was completely out of nowhere, and I think that made me enjoy it even more. This even comes after last year's 25th anniversary celebration of the original movie.
The untitled Jurassic World 3 is scheduled for release from Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment on June 11, 2021.
