There are very few movies that I can remember in my lifetime where every trailer is an event. I’m not just talking about packing a Los Angeles area theater for a trailer screening event. It’s also the days of chatter on social media, and constant fan speculation. The second trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home may not have had everything that fans were hoping for, but did give us more insight into the story. If you haven’t seen it yet, take a look.
The first thing that jumps out at me is when Doc Ock doesn’t recognize Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. That should have been obvious, but still somewhat unexpected. That opens the door for a reluctant “hero” turn from Alfred Molina’s character. After all, his beef isn’t with THIS Peter Parker. From the looks of things, some of his other foes don’t feel the same way.
It appears that Green Goblin, Electro and Sandman are equal opportunity Spidey killers. Quick shout out for the comics accurate Electro suit making an appearance, but that is far from the headline. Doctor Strange tells Peter that all of these villains die fighting Spider-Man. This is obviously something that young Peter wants no part of. Unfortunately for him, there is always one person that wants to preserve the multiverse at all costs. This creates a whole new level of conflict.
The trailer isn’t completely without it’s fun. We see plenty of snark from MJ, and even a joke at Doc Ock’s expense. True to what Holland said in a recent interview, those moments are few and far between. We even see a scene reminiscent of Gwen Stacy’s fate, but with MJ taking the fall. Could this be when another web slinger shows up to save the day? Only time will tell.
Tickets for Spider-Man: No Way Home go on sale November 29th, a day dubbed as “Spider-Monday”. The movie itself drops on December 17th, only in theaters. What comes next, reveal wise, is anyone’s guess. Just remember, having a little mystery heading into the theater isn’t a bad thing. Whatever does come next, we’ll cover it.
