No Season 2 For ‘Jupiter’s Legacy’, But There’s A Spinoff

It's nothing new, shows get canceled all of the time.  Sometimes they get saved, sometimes they even end up on another network.  Then there's the news about what's happening with Jupiter's Legacy, which is far from the norm.

Variety reports that the cast of the series has been released from their contracts.  While this is not an official cancellation, it's definitely a cue to take the hint.  If you read the room, the series is done after only a single season.  In saying that, thing are not completely over.

Netflix has ordered a Supercrooks series from Millarworld, which is set in the same universe as Jupiter's Legacy.  This is unrelated to the anime series of the same name that has already been in the works.  As the name suggests, this series would follow the villains of the series.  This particular story is one that Mark Millar created with artist Leinil Francis Yu, so the creative team is slightly different.

Speaking of Millar, he made a statement regarding Jupiter's Legacy, saying that, "We’re confident we’ll return to it later."

I'm not sure that time will be that kind to this lone season, which I mostly enjoyed.  This doesn't strike me as something that will age well and fans will want to revisit at some point.  At the same time, the future of the flagship series could hinge on just how well Supercrooks does.  If the show is wildly popular, that could bring back talk of resurrecting the original series.  This new series will obviously feature heroes of some sort at some point, even though the focus is on the villains.  There's also a chance that we could still see characters from the original series in this new series (Hutch comes to mind.)

This does continue the somewhat rocky road for the relationship between Netflix and Millarworld.  After acquiring the rich catalogue of stories, the pair have yet to have a successful venture.  You might remember that The Magic Order, which was the first comic that was created under the new partnership, never got beyond the page.  Several other stories are still very much in the development phase.  Only time will tell what the future of these stories will actually be.  More on this as it develops.
