The Fabulous Emancipation of Harley Quinn will begin soon, just not on a small screen. Variety reports that the new footage of the upcoming Birds of Prey movie will only screen in theaters. The footage did leak online a bit early, but was quickly removed at the studio's request.
No matter how you look at this, it's actually a brilliant move by Warner Bros. Either way, you're getting fans to talk about the Birds of Prey movie. You'll have those that are upset about the footage not being released online, talking about how that's just how things are done now. Sure, but that doesn't mean that studios should have to just bow to the norm every time either. Seeing a trailer for the first time in a theater used to be a cool and special thing. Now, I'm betting that you pay more attention to the credits than you do the previews. Funny how that transition happened over the last decade, isn't it?
You'll also have fans that will be excited for this added bonus while they're seeing a movie that they already wanted to see. I won't go as far as to say fans will go see a movie JUST to see this Birds of Prey teaser, but it's certain to get some buzz on social media. Fans like to tweet about movies that they have seen, and Birds of Prey may get some residual trends from that as well. So I don't really see how Warner Bros. loses here.
Personally I can't wait to see Margo Robbie (Harley Quinn), Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) giving us a fresh take on this classic trio. Don't forget Ewan McGregor as Black Mask and Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz! Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) will be in theaters February 7, 2020.
