The last time we saw Mr. and Mrs. Smith on screen, Brad Pitt and Angelia Jolie were rolling in nearly $500 million at the box office. Now these lover and hired guns will be headed to Amazon with a new cast and a new way to tell the story. Donald Glover (Atlanta) and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) have been cast as the lead roles for a new reboot series based on the 2005 film from New Regency.
Teaming with Amazon Studios, the new series would be based on that film. Glover and Waller-Bridge will also be producers of the series, along with showrunner Francesca Sloane (Atlanta). They will be joined by Yariv Milchan and Michael Schaefer (New Regency), and Jenny Robins (Wells Street Films). This project will be part of Sloane's overall deal with Amazon.
"Talk about the dream team! Donald and Phoebe are two of the most talented creators and performers in the world. It’s truly a dream for us, as it will be for our global audience, to have these two forces of nature collaborating as a powerhouse creative team," said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios. "Mr. and Mrs. Smith is an iconic property, and we can’t wait to see how Donald, Phoebe and Francesca make it their own. We’re thrilled to be working with them, and with such great partners at New Regency."
I feel like doing this reboot as a series might be an opportunity to have a bit more fun with the character dynamics. Keep in mind that Glover and Waller-Bridge have been on screen together before, in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Putting that dynamic together again will likely result in some great chemistry and action packed moments. It's hard to argue with the "dream team" label.
No timetable was given for the release, but keep an eye out here for any updates.
