John Ridley’s ‘The Other History Of The DC Universe’ Finally Arrives In November

When I was at the DC in D.C. event back in 2018, Academy Award winning screenwriter John Ridley teased a very exciting project when I talked to him. It has taken some time, but that story will finally be told this November. The Other History of the DC Universe will take a look at some of the most iconic moments in DC history from a different perspective.

This five issue miniseries will be published under DC’s Black Label. These stories will tell these stories through the eyes of Jefferson Pierce, a.k.a. Black Lightning; his daughter Anissa, also known as Thunder; Mal Duncan (Herald) and his wife, Karen Beecher (Bumblebee); Renee Montoya (the Question); and Tatsu Yamashiro (Katana). So you might think you know the whole story, but it is a matter of perspective. Seeing certain events through the eyes of characters who may not have been well represented at the time will surely widen the scope and effects that were not known before.

“Following the American Way sequel, I was eager to tell a different story in the DC Universe, one that spotlights heroes who operate outside the prevailing culture,” said Ridley. “Considering the events of the last few months, I don’t think there has been a more urgent need to see the world through a variety of lenses and perspectives. I am deeply appreciative of DC, Cammo, and Andrea, and to all the artisans who have literally put years of work into these stories. I am so enthusiastic for the opportunity to share this series with both the longtime fans of the DCU and a new generation of readers who I hope will feel invited and encouraged to join in.”

Ridley will be joined by artist Giuseppe “Cammo” Camuncoli, Andrea Cucchi, and colorist José Villarrubia. Jamal Campbell will also provide some variant covers. The first issue will be available at local comic book shops and digital retailers on Tuesday, November 24th. Keep checking back for our review.
