Let’s face it, there are very few comic book title options for middle grade girls. There are some exceptions, but as a casual observation, not a lot there. While one title certainly won’t change that, IDW and Marvel team up once again to help the cause.
In a press release today, IDW announced Marvel Action Captain Marvel, with the cover art shown above. The book will be written by Sam Maggs, who is no stranger to Marvel titles, having worked on Marvel: Fearless and Fantastic! Female Super Heroes Save the World. Art will be provided by Sweeney Boo with colors from Brittany Peer. In this story,Carol Danvers’ quiet night with BFF Jessica Drew (Spider-Woman) takes a catastrophic turn when Manhattan’s bodegas are suddenly overrun by a host of angry felines! And not just any felines—Flerkens, the most terrifying, pocket-dimension-holding, tentacle-devouring kitty-look-alikes in the entire universe! Can Captain Marvel overcome the formidable foes before it’s too late?
This seems like a no brainer for both IDW and Marvel, with Carol Danvers being more popular and recognizable to fans than ever before. I always say that there need to be more options to get younger readers into comics, and this is a great step. I’ve found Marvel Action Spider-Man to be very enjoyable as well, so I’m sure this book would also appeal to adults looking for something a bit lighter in their pull box. The first issue will be out sometime in August. No doubt we will find out more coming up at SDCC this year.
