UPDATE (6/6/20): Showrunner Caroline Dries has confirmed the re-casting in an interview with Give Me My Remote. It reads: “So, to be honest with you, I did consider the soap opera version for a hot minute, selfishly, because we had a couple episodes already written, and transition-wise, it would be seamless [since] we already started breaking season 2. But upon further reflection, and [executive producer] Greg [Berlanti] helped me make this call—and he’s way smarter than me about this sort of stuff—he’s like, ‘You know, I think we should just reboot the character in terms of reboot Batwoman as a different character.’ Just to also respect everything that Ruby [Rose] put into the Kate Kane character.”
This is an interesting story that continues to get more interesting. Ruby Rose is leaving the Batwoman role, that’s one thing that we know for sure. The reasons are debatable, but that might not be where it stops. Decider reports that the character of Kate Kane might be replaced on the show now as well.
The suspicion started when Ruby Rose’s likeness was remove from The CW website talking about their future programming. At first, you’d think this was just due to her leaving the show. Now this new report says there is a leaked casting call for a character named, “Ryan Wilder”. The description reads, “She’s likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the batsuit before her. With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero.”
So, is this a smokescreen or not? It seems pretty clear that all parties are still interested in casting someone from the LGBTQ community to play Batwoman. Wallis Day (Krypton) has been in the rumor mill, but that’s all it is for now. This potentially new character could also open the door for any ethnicity, as well. More importantly, this could mean a very sharp turn in the story if this is all true.
More on this coming up on Episode 319 of the podcast.
