When Warner Bros. started looking for the right person to play Renee Montoya in Season 3 of Batwoman, they definitely started in their own backyard. Deadline reports that Victoria Cartagena will once again play Montoya, and appear as a series regular on Batwoman. Cartagena also played the character on Gotham, but before you get any ideas, the two universes are not connected.
So, what will this latest iteration of Renee Montoya be doing to save Gotham City? Based on the description, her job is going to be quite interesting: "Montoya is a former GCPD officer who left the force when she could no longer stomach the corruption inside the department. She now runs the 'freaks division,' which hasn’t seen a lot of action… until now. Righteous and pragmatic, and LGBTQ+, she’s a woman with a very personal (and mysterious) mission to help clean the streets of Gotham in the right way, by whatever means necessary."
What's not clear is whether she will be a friend or foe of the Bat team. I, for one, am curious to see how Renee Montoya gets along with Ryan Wilder. Honestly, given both of their personalities, I could see this being a great friendship or a fierce rivalry. Their end goal might still be the same, but that doesn't mean they will get along. It will also be quite interesting to see what this "mission" is that Montoya has and exactly what "freaks" she is in charge of.
Batwoman returns to The CW on October 13th. More on this as it develops.
