Two ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Alums Cast In Live Action ‘Powerpuff Girls’ Series

Get ready for a very different take on The Powerpuff Girls.  These heroes are all grown up, and maybe a little moody.  Deadline reports that the main cast has been revealed, two of which have appeared on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Chloe Bennet, who had the longest run on the Marvel series, will play Blossom Utonium. Take a look at the character description:  "Although she was a spunky, conscientious, Little-Miss-Perfect child who holds several advanced degrees, Blossom’s repressed kiddie-superhero trauma has left her feeling anxious and reclusive, and she aims to become a leader again — this time on her own terms."

Dove Cameron, best known for her role in Descendants but also appeared with Bennet on S.H.I.E.L.D., will play Bubbles Utonium. It looks like she'll be a bit tougher now that she's older:  "Her sweet-girl disposition won America’s hearts as a child, and she still sparkles as an adult, but her charming exterior belies an unexpected toughness and wit. She’s initially more interested in recapturing her fame than saving the world, but she just might surprise us and herself."

Finally Yana Perrault (Jagged Little Pill) will play Buttercup Utonium. It looks like Buttercup wants to be off the grid: "She was the rebellious badass of the Powerpuff Girls in its heyday. More sensitive than her tough exterior suggests, Buttercup has spent her adulthood trying to shed her Powerpuff Girl identity and live an anonymous life."

Berlanti Productions and Vita Vera Films will produce in association with Warner Bros. Television. Cody and Mars executive produce with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, David Madden and Kiley as well as Erika Kennair. Diablo Cody and Heather Regnier wrote the pilot, which will be directed by Maggie Kiley.

It should be interesting to see how fans react to this new take on the characters created so many years ago by Craig McCracken. Will the disillusioned trio have a darker feel similiar to something like Riverdale or keep some of the lighthearted feel of the original series?  We'll find out when The Powerpuff Girls premieres on The CW in the Fall of 2021.
