I think it's safe to say that The Boys is set to make a big splash in 2022. Not only are we hoping for Season 3 to premiere in the upcoming new year, we also have a spinoff to look forward to. Well, it turns out that's not all. At CCXP Worlds 2021, Amazon Studios announced that The Boys world would be expanding into an animated series.
Diabolical will be set in the same world at the live action series, but will show some of the unseen stories in that universe. Prime Video will air eight episodes of this new series, and you won't believe who will create these stories. Some of the names include Awkwafina, Garth Ennis, Eliot Glazer and Ilana Glazer, Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen, Simon Racioppa, Justin Roiland and Ben Bayouth, Andy Samberg, and Aisha Tyler. Probably not what you expected, right? Well, Karl Urban certainly seems excited about it.
The Boys executive producer Eric Kripke will also have the same role for Diabolical. This statement he gave, which was part of the press release, suggests that the series might be closer to premiering than you might think. He says, "Surprise! We’re almost finished with eight episodes of our animated series, Diabolical. We gathered together some incredible creators and we gave them one rule … just kidding, there’s no rules. They blew the doors off it, delivering eight completely unexpected, funny, shocking, gory, moist, emotional episodes. You think The Boys is nuts? Wait till you see this."
Executive producers and writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg also talked about one of the inspirations for the series, “Ever since we saw the animated film The Animatrix, a series of short animated films set in the universe of The Matrix, we’ve wanted to rip it off. Today that dream has come true.”
Joining Kripke, Rogan and Goldberg as executive producers will be Simon Racioppa, James Weaver, Neal H. Moritz, Pavun Shetty, Ori Marmur, Ken F. Levin, Jason Netter, Garth Ennis, Darick Robertson, Michaela Starr, Loreli Alanís, Chris Prynoski, Shannon Prynoski, and Ben Kalina. Diabolical is produced by Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television Studios, with Titmouse, Kripke Enterprises, Original Film, and Point Grey Pictures.
When in 2022 could we see this new series? A lot of that could depend on the progress of the other two live action series in the universe. If The Boys Season 3 seems far off, I could see Diabolical premiering in the late first quarter or early second quarter next year. This seems like a perfect addition to the wild world of The Boys, so I'm hoping to see it sooner rather than later. Keep checking back for updates.
