It seems like we have been saying goodbye in the Arrowverse a lot lately. Arrow has ended, original cast members of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow continue to depart the series and today we were dealt another bit of bad news. Deadline reports that Supergirl will end after it’s upcoming sixth season.
No specific reason was given, other than that it is just time. Remember, the series began on CBS in October of 2015 before moving to The CW the following year. The series has always had a rather large budget, but I don’t see that being the reason. I certainly don’t think Superman & Lois has anything to do with it. To me, it just felt like the series was coming to the end of it’s story. Much like Arrow, sometimes it’s just time for things to end and go out with grace.
Speaking of grace, Supergirl herself, Melissa Benoist was the first to post her reaction to the news.

That kind of says it all, doesn’t it? Remember, Melissa is going to have her first child soon. That’s just one of the reasons that production on the now final season has been delayed (other than COVID, of course.) While many of the other series are set to return in early 2021, Supergirl was expected to return later in the year.
This is all still very fresh, so there are sure to be updates in the weeks and months to come. Who knows, we could even see a character or two move to another show. More on this as it develops.
