‘Spider-Man’ Gets A Very Different New Look

So…remember when everyone got angry with Nick Spencer over the whole Hydra Cap thing? There’s a decent chance some fans will be coming for Spencer again for a major change to a fan favorite character. In Amazing Spider-Man #61, a new look was revealed for the web slinger. You can see it in the cover art for Issue 63 above.

The design itself is from artist Dustin Weaver. Marvel says that it’s “unlike anything that Peter Parker has worn before.” I think that’s a bit of an understatement. There is a reason for this, after the events of Sin Rising. This is the suit that Spidey will use to take on Kingpin. So who is really responsible for the new look?

“This design was really a collaborative effort between Nick Spencer, Editor Nick Lowe, and I. They reined in the weirder and more techy features I was bringing and helped create something that I think is simple and both futuristic and classical,” Weaver said. “I can’t wait to see Patrick Gleason really bring it to life!”

I’m not saying that I hate it, but I’m not a huge fan either. We’ll find out more when Spencer’s run begins, but something tells me this won’t go over well. Spencer is kind of building a reputation for these shock value, big change moments after taking over a character. Does that mean the story will be bad? Not from this alone, no. It does, however, put a huge amount of focus on the new look and not the new story. Sure it gets more attention, and more social media chatter, but that doesn’t always work out for the best. Some will love it, others won’t, but both will be very vocal about it. That’s just the nature of comics.

I’ll be keeping a close eye on this one, and I’ll be sure to have a review of these upcoming issues.
