‘Red Sonja’ Movie Finds A New Director

The She-Devil with a Sword may have taken one big step forward to returning to the big screen. According to Deadline, with Bryan Singer being out as the director of the Millennium Films project, he will be replaced by Jill Soloway. You might know Soloway as the creator of “Transparent” from Amazon Prime Video. She will both write and direct the upcoming movie.

Efforts to make a Red Sonja movie have not gone well in recent years. Robert Rodriguez was set to direct a Red Sonja movie in 2010 with Rose McGowan, but that never got made. It seemed like this incarnation was doomed as well after Singer was removed amid allegations of sexual misconduct during his career. Going back to the drawing board does mean that it will probably be a while before this movie sees the light of day. It’s a good thing there are plenty of great Dynamite comics to read until then!

With the recent success of Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel at the box office, now is the perfect time to bring more female heroes to the screen. Soloway herself told Deadline: “Exploring this powerful mythology and evolving what it means to be a heroine is an artistic dream come true.” Despite being around for 40+ years, I feel like Red Sonja has been very underutilized outside of the world of comics. While Soloway does lack some experience in the genre, she is an accomplished writer and could bring a very unique perspective to the character.
