The celebration of Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month continues. Not only does that bring much needed awareness, but it also tends to lead to the announcement of new movies and TV series from Asian creators telling their stories. Netflix Manager of Original Animation announced several new projects today, one of which you will likely be familiar with.
Mech Cadet Yu, the fan favorite Boom! Studios series from writer Greg Pak and artist Takeshi Miyazawa, will be adapted to series on Netflix. The series is executive produced by Boom! Studios, Japanese studio Polygon Pictures Inc. and Aaron Lam who serves as the writer and an executive producer. The comic was first released in 2017.
Here is the official synopsis for the series: “Fifty years in the future, after a terrifying alien species attacked our planet, teenager Stanford Yu works as a janitor at the Sky Corps Military Academy. But he’s only dreamed of one thing his entire life — to pilot a Robo Mech, giant robots from outer-space who came to our aid. When he finally gets his shot, Stanford and his classmates must put aside all personal differences and work together as a team in order to defend humanity against a new invasion of aliens.”
I remember really enjoying the comic when it was first released. I think the 3D animation style will bring a real pop to the story on screen. The only bad news is, we’ll have to wait until 2023. That gives you plenty of time to catch up on the first three volumes of Mech Cadet Yu from Boom! Studios. Keep checking back for updates.
