I'm just going to cut right to the chase here: what the hell is going on at Marvel TV right now? There has been a lot of news lately, and pretty much none of it has been positive. This latest bombshell comes courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter, with news that Marvel's Tigra & Dazzler showrunner Erica Rivinoja has been "dismissed" from the series, along with the entire writing staff. As a result, the show has been put on hold.
As is usually the case, creative differences was the reason given for the dismissal. The report says that multiple scripts had already been written and that they were almost completely through their production cycle. Now all of that has been put in the proverbial garbage can and an entirely new team will be put in place. It's worth noting that Chelsea Handler appears to still be on board as an executive producer, and will voice one of the lead roles. Marvel and Hulu have yet to comment on the initial report.
This is the latest in a series of exits, cancellations and turmoil since it was announced that Kevin Feige would be taking creative control of all things Marvel. I jokingly said that everything in the Jeph Loeb era would probably be dumped under this new creative control. Now it seems less funny and more like impending reality. Keep in mind that Tigra & Dazzler is just one of four planned adult themed animated series from Marvel on Hulu. While the others seem on track for now, with all of this recent news I would probably be updating my resume just in case.
I'll have more thoughts on this coming up on Episode 294 of our podcast.
