Given all of the turmoil surrounding Warner Bros. Discovery, there was bound to be some good news coming. After rumors and reports had swirled for about a month, confirmation came today that Lady Gaga would indeed be joining the upcoming Joker sequel. The official Instagram account for the film posted the following video to make the announcement.
Obviously, we see that Gaga’s character has not been confirmed, but those same reports also said that she would be playing Harley Quinn. I think that the red and black in the video is a good hint towards that, but it’s interesting that the video didn’t just confirm it. The assumption is that the film would also take place largely inside Arkham Asylum, since that is where Arthur Fleck ended up at the end of the first movie. Regardless of the plot, Lady Gaga is an award winning actress and should bring a lot to the role. She would join Margot Robbie as the second Academy Awards nominee to be cast as Harley Quinn in live action.
Todd Phillips returns to direct, and other reports suggest that Joaquin Phoenix got a boatload of money to return as The Joker. Beyond that, we don’t know much about the plot or any other characters that we might see. Joker: Folie À Deux will be released in theaters on October 4, 2024. There will be many more updates to come, so keep checking back.
