Sometimes, rumors end up being true in the end. Now one of the most talked about stories of the last couple of months just added an exciting new chapter. Warner Bros. Television, The CW and Berlanti Productions announced that Javicia Leslie has been cast at Batwoman for the upcoming season of The CW series. That’s not all that they revealed.
Remember that Ryan Wilder story and those leaked audition tapes? Well, Leslie will indeed play Ryan Wilder and that character will take up the Batwoman mantle. This is the official character description, and it might look very familiar: “Ryan Wilder is about to become Batwoman. She’s likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the Batsuit before her. With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. Today Ryan lives in her van with her plant. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat and could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical all-American hero.”
Javicia Leslie will become the first black woman to portray the character of Batwoman in live action for TV or film. You might know her from the last two seasons of God Friended Me or the BET series The Family Business. She is also part of the LGBTQ+ community.
She released a statement saying, “I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community.”
I will talk more about this story on Episode 324 of the podcast this week. Batwoman returns for a second season in January of 2021 on The CW.
