I’ll be the first to admit, I wasn’t sure about Jared Leto’s Joker being a part of the reshoots for Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Not because I didn’t like his portrayal in Suicide Squad, but because I wasn’t sure how and where he would fit in. Synder revealed those plans, and a look at the Clown Prince of Crime, in a recent interview with Vanity Fair.
This look is radically different from Leto’s previous portrayal. (POSSIBLE SPOILER) The Joker will appear in the full Knightmare sequence with Ben Affleck’s Batman. The dream sequence shows Bruce Wayne what would happen if they could not stop the onslaught from Darkseid. His guide? The Joker, of course. Judging by the look, it’s going to be quite creepy and unnerving.
“The cool thing about the scene is that it’s Joker talking directly to Batman about Batman,” Snyder told Vanity Fair. “It’s Joker analyzing Batman about who he is and what he is. That’s the thing I also felt like fans deserved from the DC Universe. That is to say, the Jared Leto Joker and the Ben Affleck Batman, they never really got together. It seemed uncool to me that we would make it all the way through this incarnation of Batman and Joker without seeing them come together.”
This will further explain the Joker card on the gun from Batman V. Superman, the death of Robin and just how much pain The Joker has caused Bruce over the years. While it doesn’t feel like a long scene (even though it’s a four hour movie), it feels like a deep dive into that Batman/Joker relationship in a short period of time. Given that there probably will not be a sequel, it feels like Snyder wants to get as much of his story and his vision into this film as he can.
Could this appearance actually revive the chances of Leto playing The Joker again? We’ll have to see what happens when Zack Snyder’s Justice League premieres March 18th on HBO Max.
