Can we officially call this the “new normal”? I’m sick of that term too, but Disney is certainly making it seem like they are pushing more of an emphasis to streaming. Jungle Cruise becomes their latest film to receive a same day release both in theaters and on Disney+. Who better to make the announcement than the star himself, Dwayne Johnson?
I do love how he said, “Audience first.” Part of that is because I feel like he truly means it. So now, when Jungle Cruise is released on July 30th, you can see it in theaters or on Disney+ with Premier Access. The same has been done with the upcoming releases of Cruella and Black Widow. Even Disney and Pixar’s Luca is headed straight to Disney+. So even with things opening back up, you’ll still have plenty of streaming options.
Jaume Collet-Serra directs the film, which stars Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Edgar Ramírez and Jack Whitehall, with Jesse Plemons, and Paul Giamatti. The story is by John Norville & Josh Goldstein with Glenn Ficarra & John Requa, who also wrote the screenplay with Michael Green. So let’s look at said story.
“Jungle Cruise is an adventure-filled, rollicking thrill-ride down the Amazon with wisecracking skipper Frank Wolff and intrepid researcher Dr. Lily Houghton. Lily travels from London, England to the Amazon jungle and enlists Frank’s questionable services to guide her downriver on La Quila—his ramshackle-but-charming boat. Lily is determined to uncover an ancient tree with unparalleled healing abilities—possessing the power to change the future of medicine. Thrust on this epic quest together, the unlikely duo encounters innumerable dangers and supernatural forces, all lurking in the deceptive beauty of the lush rainforest. But as the secrets of the lost tree unfold, the stakes reach even higher for Lily and Frank and their fate—and mankind’s—hangs in the balance.”
