Disney Finally Picks Up A Boom! Studios Adaptation With ‘The Empty Man’

It’s been a run of bad luck for the Boom! Studios first look deal with 20th Century Fox since the Disney acquisition. First Mouse Guard is dropped, then it was Lumberjanes. Now, Boom finally gets a win.

According to Variety, ‘The Empty Man’ movie is happening under the Disney umbrella. The series, created by Cullen Bunn, was originally announced for adaptation in 2016 with James Badge (Iron Man 3) set to star. No word on if he, or writer/director David Prior are still on board.

I remember reviewing Issue 1 of The Empty Man, and it was “freaking terrifying”, as I put it before. If you don’t know the story, here is the synopsis from Boom! Studios:

It’s been one year since the first reported case of the Empty Man disease, and no drug has been able to slow its progress. The cause is unknown, and the symptoms include fits of rage, hideous hallucinations, suicidal dementia, followed by death, or a near lifeless, ’empty’ state of catatonia. As murder cults rise nationwide, the FBI and CDC enter a joint investigation of the Empty Man, hoping to piece together clues to stop the cult and uncover a cure.

There have been six issues of the comic, so far, and one collected trade. The movie has a release date of August 7, 2020.
