David Benioff & D.B. Weiss Walk Away From ‘Star Wars’

Ever since Disney bought LucasFilm, it seems like there has been a flood of new Star Wars content to come our way.  There were even many arguments that we were going to get Star Wars fatigue from all of the stuff coming.  Well, consider this piece of news like a good night's sleep with a shot of espresso.

According to Deadline, executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss of Game of Thrones fame, will no longer be leading the post Skywalker Star Wars trilogy after all.  Long story short, the pair have walked away from the project and said they simply don't have time for Star Wars.  Keep in mind, the first of these movies wasn't even supposed to hit theaters until 2022.  I know that's not THAT far away, but still, Star Wars seems to be one of those things that you make time for.

It appears that the door is still open for a return.  Here is what Lucasfilm President Kathlee Kennedy said in a statement to Deadline: "David Benioff and Dan Weiss are incredible storytellers,. We hope to include them in the journey forward when they are able to step away from their busy schedule to focus on Star Wars."

We still have plenty of Star Wars to look forward to, but you can imagine that Lucasfilm won't waste any time in searching for replacements for Benioff and Weiss.  Given the fan backlash that the two received, I can't really blame them for walking away.  Imagine what Star Wars fans would have said.  Plus, when you make a Star Wars fan angry, it takes them DECADES to really get rid of it (if ever).  I doubt that had anything to do with it, but I can't rule it out.

Benioff and Weiss will now turn their attention to their next project for HBO, Confederate, which will be out soon.  They are also working on some Netflix projects.  What do you think about the exit?
