I will admit it, I never thought it would actually happen. For what seems like forever now, fans have been calling on Warner Bros. Pictures to release the Zack Snyder cut of the Justice League movie. Some said that it didn’t really exist. Not only does it exist, but Warner has announced that it is coming to HBO Max in 2021.
After nearly four years of campaigning, Snyder made the announcement during a virtual watch party of Man of Steel on social media. He also added, “I want to thank HBO Max and Warner Brothers for this brave gesture of supporting artists and allowing their true visions to be realized. Also a special thank you to all of those involved in the SnyderCut movement for making this a reality.”
So what are the early details? Beyond the 2021 release date, there aren’t many. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie could be released as a four hour full movie or in six TV style chapters. They also report that Warner Bros. is spending an extra $20 million to finish it. Everyone who worked on the original with Snyder will return to finish the score and final visual effects. It remains to be seen if this will be the entirely new experience that is being promised.
“Thanks to the efforts of a lot people, we’re excited to bring fans this highly anticipated version of Justice League,” said Toby Emmerich, Chairman, Warner Bros. Pictures Group. “This feels like the right time to share Zack’s story, and HBO Max is the perfect platform for it. We’re glad the creative planets aligned, allowing us to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut.”
HBO Max launches nationwide on May 27, 2020.
