Timing is everything, isn’t it? As 2019 draws to a close, here are a couple of things that we know for sure. The first being that the Sonic The Hedgehog movie got off to a very rocky start. The second is that Baby Yoda has taken the internet, social media and the whole world by storm. What comes next should be no real surprise.
Have you seen the Japanese trailer for the Sonic The Hedgehog movie yet? Let me help you with that:

In a move that should shock no one, Baby Sonic has been revealed. I know that the Sonic ship is on a better path now, but anyone who isn’t a diehard might still need convincing. So, is this pandering?
The timing seems very convenient. I know this was an international trailer, but the powers that be behind this movie knew the trailer (and subsequent poster) would go viral worldwide when revealed. There is a good chance that this has little to nothing to do with the larger plot of the upcoming movie.
I wouldn’t go as far as saying this is a desperate ploy to attract eyes to the project, but it certainly feels that way. It also makes me worry more about the studio’s faith in the project. Why do this after releasing a trailer, with your much better re-designs, if you got the response that you wanted? I was gaining optimism in regards to Sonic, but after this, it’s taken a few steps back. Sure, Baby Sonic has the cute factor, but I think most fans know it will likely be nothing more than an extended easter egg.
Sonic The Hedgehog will be in theaters February 14, 2020.
